Olympic champion Alexander Zverev reached the round of 16 of the Madrid tennis tournament on the night shift. The 27-year-old won his third-round match on Monday night. Canadian Denis Shapovalov won 6:4, 7:5 after a good performance and now faces the Argentine Francisco Cerundolo.

Before fourth-seeded Zverev, Jan-Lennard Struff also secured his ticket to the round of 16 of the Masters 1000 clay-court tournament on Sunday. A week after his first title on the ATP circuit in Munich, the 34-year-old from Sauerland defeated the Frenchman Ugo Humbert by 7: 5 and 6: 4.

Struff showed a convincing performance and took advantage of his second match point to triumph with a forehand after 1:37 hours. The veteran scored 34 straight winners with only 18 slight errors against Humbert, who was number 13. The next opponent is now from Spain Star Carlos Alcaraz.

Daniel Altmaier, however, was eliminated in the third round. The Davis Cup player lost to the eighth placed team Poland Hubert Hurkacz 4:6, 6:7 (2:7).
