So far, five people have died and 35 others have been injured and hospitalized in a serious fire at a high-rise in Hong Kong. It is still unclear why the fire broke out.

bAt least five people died in a high-rise fire in Hong Kong. The government of the Special Administrative Region of China confirmed this on Wednesday. As of Wednesday afternoon (local time), another 35 people were injured and taken to hospitals. In total, the authorities brought about 150 people to safety.

According to official information, the fire broke out around 8 am. The fire department received numerous calls for help, he said.

Investigation of the cause of the fire

The fire is said to have started in the gym. After about an hour it was under control. Rescuers evacuated many people from their homes using ladders, as seen in the photos.

Residents around the densely populated metropolis have now been ordered to keep their windows and doors closed due to the smoke and stench. The affected Yau Tsim Mong district administration set up a special contact point to assist residents if needed. According to the authorities, those in need could also seek protection at the community center.

Hong Kong government number two Eric Chan said police and firefighters are investigating the cause of the fire. Several politicians, including Prime Minister John Lee, expressed their condolences for the victims.
