The recent setback in Freiburg has not improved the mood at FC Bayern. But the bosses remain with Thomas Tuchel. This could even have an impact on next season.
As a DAZN expert, Jonas Hummels summed it up after the 2-2 draw in Freiburg: “It was definitely the right decision to part ways at the end of the season. The only question is: what to do between now and the end of the season.”
On Saturday morning, the Bayern officials found the answer to this question. As BILD reports, Thomas Tuchel will remain in office. You don't want to reverse the fundamental decision you made after a win and a draw. Tuchel will therefore sit on the bench for the second leg of the round of 16 against Lazio on Tuesday.
But although the last two games have not been lost, the signals coming from Tuchel are worrying.
FCBinside gives three reasons why sticking with the coach is a risk.
1. There was no sporting change
As far as Tuchel is concerned, Bayern's leaders have squandered their last trump card.
The announcement of Thomas Tuchel's parting in the summer was supposed to have a liberating effect on the team. To initiate a change of mood without the constant discussion of the background coaches.
After the last-minute victory against RB Leipzig, there was a slight glimmer of hope that the home victory could be the start of a sporting change.
But after the match in Freiburg one thing is clear: there can be no talk of a change of course. The latest balance is now even worse. Bayern has achieved one victory in its last five official matches.
Above all, you have to think about the team's appearance on the field. Once again the team acted sleepy as they conceded both goals. As in Leverkusen, a cheap goal was awarded after an opponent's throw-in.
In general, the Munich team once again played without spirit in the first half. Without ideas. Without a plan.
This lack of planning is due to Tuchel, clarified Jonas Hummels as a DAZN expert.
“I wonder why this keeps happening like this. In an away game in Freiburg, they come from a phase in which they have not had much success. Why can't you set the structure yourself in a game like this. Why do you have to wait until halftime to change a three-man chain? Honestly, I don't understand it,” Hummels criticized the coach.
Tuchel himself saw the mistakes (once again) mainly in the team. “It wasn't a question of will, we played without thinking for the first half hour,” he complained.
2. Negative behavior
In a phase in which things are not going well on a sporting level, the coach would have to continue making positive progress. Tuchel would have to embody the conviction that the championship deficit can still be recovered.
But in Freiburg there were no signs of any positive charisma from the coach. Jonas Hummels didn't miss it either.
“He stays sitting by the doors. Everyone applauds, he stays seated. Personally, I don't like it at all,” the brother of the former Bayern player put his finger on the wound.
Even against Leipzig, Tuchel reacted seemingly indifferently to the late winning goal. Only Thomas Müller made him laugh with a comment.
Tuchel conducted the interviews after the Freiburg game with one or two hands in his pockets. During his testimony, he repeatedly shook his head or responded to reporters' questions with a shrug.
At the press conference he promised that they now wanted to “push positively” towards Lazio. But above all, this would require a more positive attitude on his part.
3. Imminent exit from the Champions League
He FC Bayern Think big. He Bundesliga It's the bread and butter business. But success in the Champions League is crucial to the club's international appeal.
According to Bayern's image, the German record champion is one of the eight best teams Europe. An elimination against the current ninth-placed team in Serie A does not fit this image of themselves.
There is also something at stake financially against Lazio. For winning and reaching the quarterfinals, FC Bayern would receive 13.4 million euros from UEFA. Money that would surely be used for transfers and the planned restructuring of the team.
In other words: Bayern must advance on Tuesday. It's hard to believe that Tuchel will achieve it.
